SCIENCE EXPLORATION OF EROSION

Think about the two different demonstrations that took place outside this week.

First, explain what we did in the first ditch. Tell about the landforms you saw being formed. Explain how you knew what you were seeing. (example: A valley was formed because a low place between the two mountains was formed.)

Next, the second paragraph will tell about what we did in the ditch at the top of the hill and what you learned.

You will be graded on whether you used all of the vocabulary words correctly and if you followed the directions to form two paragraphs with topic sentences and concluding sentences and had all required information.

Use the following vocabulary in 2 well written paragraphs. Be sure to include an explanation of how you know each of the things you learned. You may type it here or write on a separate sheet of notebook paper. You will have 2 days to work on it before turning it in.
erosion sediment meander canyon delta
river basin deposition slope dam lake

In the first dich Mrs. Greenslade made a dirt (little) mountain. She put a hose with water coming out of it on the mountain to show us erosin. Erosin, is when Earth's materials are worn away by wind or water. Then a river (witch is a narrow body of water) started to fourm.
Things like meanders, dams, basins, and even little isands started to fourm. Meander is a slow turn in a river. Dams can be manmaid or nautral, but they stop water from running through them. A basin is a low bowl shaped area such as the Nashville Basin. Then Mrs. Greenslade told us the mountain was fourming a slope. A sope is a part of a mountain that has started to sag like a ski slope. We saw a delta start to fourm from the back of the mountain. A delta is a fan shaped deposit. sediment started to sink down to the bottom of the river. Sediment is when earths material such as dirt and sand the heavy stuff floats to the bottom wile the lite stuff gose on up. Then I starte to see deposition. Deposition is when earths materials settle at the bottom of the lake. this is what we did in the first ditch.

In the second ditch the fourth grade got an opertonity to make a natural dam. My dam was made from sticks an leaves. the mountain erodid an made a delta. As the mountain erodid it made a canyon. a canyon is a valley with steep walls caused by erosin. the dams were fun and easy to make. the river was fun to watch. then a the back of the mountain furmed a lake. A lake is the scond largest boy of water the first is a ocean. Dirt day was tons of fun!
